The Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (Seville Cathedral) (Seville, Spain)

  1. The Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (Seville Cathedral)

Seville is the city (around 700 thousand people) of the autonomous community of Andalusia. The city is a cultural, political and economic centre in the south part of Spain.

The mythological founder of Seville is Hercules (Heracles). He is commonly identified with the Phoenician god Melqart. He sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar to the Atlantic and founded trading posts at the current sites of the city. The city was known from Roman times as Hispalis. There were successive conquests of the Roman province by the Vandals, the Suebi and the Visigoths during the 5th and 6th centuries.

Seville was conquered by the Umayyad Caliphate in 712. Subsequently the caliphate and the succeeding emirate conquered large parts of the Iberian Peninsula until 788. This medieval Muslim territory and cultural domain is called al-Andalus. The Almohad Caliphate was defeated by an alliance of Christian kingdoms in 1212 and the Muslim domain declined. The city was captured by King Ferdinand III of Castile in 1248.

Seville became one of the economic centres of the Spanish Empire following the 1492 Christopher Columbus expedition to the New World. The enormous wealth accumulated by the monopolised trade port of the city made a Golden Age of arts and literature. Ferdinand Magellan departed from the city for the first circumnavigation of the Earth in 1519. The city was one of the most brilliant flowering cities in the Baroque period of European history though the city declined because the monopoly was broken and the 1649 Great Plague occurred.

Seville is a stage for many operas by many composers such as Beethoven (Fidelio), Mozart (The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni), Rossini (The Barber of Seville) and Bizet (Carmen).

You have come to a cathedral square on the east front of the Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See). The cathedral is also commonly known as Seville Cathedral. The cathedral is a Catholic cathedral. The cathedral is the largest cathedral and the 3rd largest church in the world (as the 2 larger churches (the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida and St. Peter’s Basilica) are not the seats of bishops). The cathedral was built to demonstrate the wealth of Seville from 1401 to 1506. The cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral in the world (Hagia Sophia was the largest for nearly 1,000 years). The bell tower of the cathedral is called the Giralda. The bell tower is 105 metres high.
